Tony Luke's is a real old-style Philadelphia classic (even if it hasn't been around all that long) a street-side stand in an odd neighborhood, with plenty of attitude. Oh, yeah, they make some great sandwiches too! They have a larger menu than most places of this ilk, but I'd guess that the vast majority of their buisiness is selling cheesesteaks and roast pork sandwiches. Many are fond of the veal or chicken cutlet sandwiches, but I've had a hard time bringing myself to order anything but the "Roast Pork Italian."

I'm torn between getting the sharp broccoli rabe that cuts the richness of the pork, but threatens to overwhelm it, and the milder spinach, which is a more subtle touch. Both are worthy companions to the juicy, garlicky pork, as is sharp provelone. The rolls, baked in-house, are really excellent for the pork, with just the right density to soak up the pork juices.

I'm not as big a fan of those rolls with the steak sandwiches, I prefer something a little lighter. But as an overall package, Tony Luke's still makes a good cheesesteak.

And the best part is that they're open until midnight Monday-Thursaday, till 2am Friday and Saturday (closed sundays.)
